Welcome and thanks for your question.

I'm Todd and I will be the expert working with you today to help resolve your problem.

What is the model of your Samsung Galaxy cell phone?

When did you purchase your cell phone?

Regards,
Todd

Hi I think that I have had it about a year but have no idea what model it is - it is likely to be a pretty basic one as it is on contract

Hi Louise,

Thank you for your reply.

Please perform the procedure below to find out model of your cell phone, that will also be the first troubleshooting step.

1. Remove back cover and battery
2. Remove SIM card (if you have SIM card in your phone).
To find model of your cell phone, check at the back sticker under battery for phone model. When done, continue to the next step.
3. Wait 5 minutes
4. Replace SIM card, battery and back cover.
5. Press and hold Power button for exactly 35 seconds.

Keep me updated please. I'll be waiting for your reply.

Regards,
Todd

It has just turned back on! It is a Samsung Galaxy S III Mini - I could not get the back off but the battery is at 40%!

Thank you

You're welcome Louise. I'm glad that I could help.

Plug the phone into the charger for minimum 2 hours and everything should be OK.

Don't worry your phone is perfectly fine. That was a glitch in the software that prevented device to work properly.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you need more information.

If you are satisfied with my personal service (my effort to help) please don't forget to rate my answer with GOOD SERVICE or EXCELLENT SERVICE, as this is the only way I get credited for helping you.
