My GT-S5830 appears to re-start itself for no apparent reason

Customer Question

My GT-S5830 appears to re-start itself for no apparent reason whilst in stand-by mode. during the "warm up period " it does media scanning and at this point I am unable to use the phone. The battery life now is about 24hrs with minimum usage no blue tooth or GPS turned on and an indicated 4% Wi-Fi battery usage. I have just replaced the battery and am having the same probs.

Hello Alan, and thanks for your question. My name is Nick and I will help you today.

Is your phone inside a case?

Did you update the phone's firmware/software or install any apps before this issue started?

Nick
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

No new apps and when I have checked re updates I have always been advised no new updates available. So nothing obvious.

The phone has always been in a case.

Thanks Alan.

Please remove the phone from its case. Remove the battery. Put battery back and turn phone on. Does it work?

Or still reboot?

Nick
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I did this when I was recommended to clean the sim card in case there was a spec of dust on the card. The phone went through the normal start up routine but after about 12 hrs the same fault occurred.

We can do a Settings reset. Note: This reset will clear your sound and notification settings. You will have to reconfigure ringtones and notifications.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Applications ->Manage Applications or Apps
  3. Select All (Look for ALL on top menu or swipe left to go right to ALL)
  4. Select Media Storage and tap Clear Data.
  5. Go back to All and select Google Services Framework.
  6. Select Clear Data.
  7. Turn off (shut down) your device and turn it back on.
  8. Test your issue.

Please let me know if this method worked or not. Thank you!

Thanks Alan,

We can backup your phone with Kies and reset your phone as follows:

First you need to Backup your phone to computer using Kies. Do not have Kies installed? Go to www.samsung.com/us/Kies and download Kies 2.6. After installed, open Kies. Connect your phone to computer and do a FULL Backup.

Then Factory reset your phone as follows:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Backup & Reset
  3. Select Factory data reset
  4. Select Reset phone
  5. Select Erase everything
  6. Your phone will reset which will take about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Set it up again.
  8. Download your apps back.

Now connect your phone to computer and open Kies. Run a Restore. Select the Backup we did to reset your phone. All data will be restored to your phone.

If Kies does not recognize your phone for some reasons, we can backup and reset as follows:

Here are the steps to backup your Contacts to SD:

To export:

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Press Menu button and select Import/Export
  3. Select Export to SD card. Your contacts will copied to SD under a vcf file.

To backup your SMS text messages:

  1. Go to Google Play and download SMS Backup & Restore app.
  2. Open this app. Tap 3 dots button on top right corner and select Preferences.
  3. Tap Backup Folder.
  4. Change the folder to External Storage Card.
  5. When done, tap Backup button. This will save your contacts to External SD card.

When done, connect your phone to computer and transfer photos, videos, and other files to computer. Your photos and videos should be inside the DCIM folder. After all are backed up/transferred, reset as follow:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Privacy or Backup & Reset
  3. Select Factory data reset
  4. Select Reset phone
  5. Select Erase everything
  6. Your device will reset which will take about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Set it up again.
  8. Test your issue if it is resolved or still have the same issue.

To import contact back to phone from SD card:

  1. Go to Contacts.
  2. Press Menu button and select Import/Export
  3. Select Import from SD card.
  4. Select the VCF file and select Import.
  5. Your contacts will be imported from SD file.

To import your SMS messages back:
  1. Download SMS Backup & Restore app from Google Play.
  2. Open SMS Backup & Restore app.
  3. Tap Restore button.
  4. Select the file and click Restore.
  5. Your SMS messages will be restored.

When all done, test to see if the phone will still have the same problem or not. Please let me know if you have any problems. Thank you!

sorry nick I could not download Kies 2.6 so followed advice re backup contacts to SD then tried SMS but was unable to find or open External storage card so could not backup . When I connected to to my PC the system did not recognise anything and went into emergency shut down mode.

It seems to me I have a deeper problem than I can resolve in this way. I conclude that we are unable to resolve this problem since the initial concern is still there. I accept that I will have to dispose of my phone and despite your best efforts seek a refund of my payment.

Thanks for all your help Alan
