No new apps and when I have checked re updates I have always been advised no new updates available. So nothing obvious.
The phone has always been in a case.
I did this when I was recommended to clean the sim card in case there was a spec of dust on the card. The phone went through the normal start up routine but after about 12 hrs the same fault occurred.
First you need to Backup your phone to computer using Kies. Do not have Kies installed? Go to www.samsung.com/us/Kies and download Kies 2.6. After installed, open Kies. Connect your phone to computer and do a FULL Backup.Then Factory reset your phone as follows:
Now connect your phone to computer and open Kies. Run a Restore. Select the Backup we did to reset your phone. All data will be restored to your phone.
If Kies does not recognize your phone for some reasons, we can backup and reset as follows:

To backup your SMS text messages:
When done, connect your phone to computer and transfer photos, videos, and other files to computer. Your photos and videos should be inside the DCIM folder. After all are backed up/transferred, reset as follow:
To import contact back to phone from SD card:

sorry nick I could not download Kies 2.6 so followed advice re backup contacts to SD then tried SMS but was unable to find or open External storage card so could not backup . When I connected to to my PC the system did not recognise anything and went into emergency shut down mode.
It seems to me I have a deeper problem than I can resolve in this way. I conclude that we are unable to resolve this problem since the initial concern is still there. I accept that I will have to dispose of my phone and despite your best efforts seek a refund of my payment.
