I have a 4 year old Kenmore dishwasher that for the past few weeks has sounded like a loud lawn mower periodically during the washing cycle. I pulled it out to see if I could detect any problem with balance or otherwise, but couldn't detect the problem. Do you have any ideas what could be wrong?
Optional Information: Make: kenmore Model: 587.15149401 Already Tried: I pulled it out, checked balance and any noticeable conditions that could cause the loud noise.
Hi does the noise happen during the wash or drain cycle?
It happens during the wash cycle and starts immediately, that is, the minute it is turned on to the normal wash cycle.
Ok then there is either something caught in the wash pump (70) or the wash pump is bad. You should check to make sure nothing is caught in the fins like a piece of glass. If all is clear replace the pump. Click HERE to view a schematic of this machine. Mike
Mr. Fixit,
If we check out the water pump and fins as you suggested, and that is not the problem, can we still ask you more questions without being charged more?
sure but if there is nothing blocking the pump then the winding is bad.
Thanks, Mike. Now, can I reach the pump, etc. from the inside or do I have to turn it on its side and work from the bottom?

You would need to pull the unit out from under the counter and lay the unit on it's back and take it out from there...Mike
Mike, I just ran a cycle while drinking a whole pot of coffee to try and detect just when and which cycle the noise starts and stops. The noise starts at the verry beginning cycle, not the filling or the wash cycle, but then again on the drain cycle. However, the noise comes and goes several times during the entire one hour cycle. I was mistaken when I previously said wash cycle. After my babysitting my noise machine, I have determined for certian it is worse during the drain cycle. What are your thoughts on this.
Hi in this case the blockage or bad part is in the drain pump. Check the drain pump for a blockage, if no blockage then replace the drain pump. Mike

Mike, I have another question. What is the first cycle that happens when the machine is turned on. I can't tell by the simple dial on my washer. Could it be a drain cycle to get the water out from a previous wash?
Mike, I am still waiting for an answer to my last question re the first cycle of the dishwasher. You stated in an earlier response that I could still ask you questions and that is why I sent the last one. Please advise and thanks.
Sorry have not been online for a day. Yes first thing that happens is the drain cycle followed by the fill.
Thanks Mike, First chance I get this week I am going to pull it out and get to work.
