Hello - My 6-year old Whirlpool Duet washer just started making an extremely loud sound during the high or medium spin cycle at the end of the entire washing cycle. It sounds like there's a dumbell in there bouncing around! Also, we noticed plastic shavings in the drum and rubber rim area. Because of this, we have been washing with a low spin cycle to avoid the noise. Is this fixable? Is it better to buy another machine? Why don't appliances last 15-years anymore? As a side note, that rubber rim has receded over time, which catches small socks, and the outside plastic handle itself broke off allowing just a small piece of solid plastic left for us to open the door. Can I even buy another Whirlpool Duet again (to match my existing tan colored Whirlpool Duet dryer), or should I just move to a better brand? Thanks so much for your assistance.Doug.
Optional Information: Make: Whirlpool Model: Duet Already Tried: Washing clothes with a low spin to avoid the noise.

Hi,from your description it may be the inner drum has dropped down and is rubbing. Can you go open the door and grab the inner stainless steel drum and raise it up and down and side to side.See if there is any movement that the rest of the outer drum is not following.

I had left work and am home now. Okay, the stainless steel drum can either spin or bounce back and forward...not up and down or side to side. When I bounce it back and forward, the outer white plastic drum bounces with the inner stainless steel drum. When I spin the inner stainless steel drum, the outer white plastic drum does not move. The stainless steel drum does spin easily. Please advise.
When you turn it by hand,is it rubbing on the shroud, the plastic piece in front and are you hearing a grinding type noise as it spins. There has to be a reason it is chewing the shroud up and usually it is either the rear bearing is bad or the support has broken away from the drumRob
When I spin by hand, it spins easily. When it spins on the low cycle, everything spins quietly. The problem is when it spins on the medium or high cycle. Besides this, what is the typical repair cost for a new rubber rim on this front-load washer and cost of a new handle?
The boot and handle will be somewhere in the vicinity of $225-250 depending on labor rates in your area. There has to be a reason for the ring to be chewed up,it wont just disenegrate on its own.Does the inner drum look out of round?Rob
$250...omg...for installing a rubber ring and a plastic handle! The ring is not chewed up. As I mentioned earlier, it is receded with discoloration. The inner drum does not look out of round. It looks great and spins great manually and during the low spin cycle. It is during the medium or high spin when the clothes spin at 100mph when it sounds aweful...like a dumbbell bouncing around in there. It literaly made us run to the laundry room to see what was going on.
Yes it is expensive, pretty labor intensive job.It sure sound like a bearing issue,or there is something in between the inner and outer tub,an even more labor intensive job.Rob
It looks like I am forced in buying a new machine which is massively upsetting. I wish Honda made a washer...it would last forever...like my lawn mower and car.
generally speaking Whirlpool is one of the best made appliances, but like anything they can break.I personally like the Bosch appliances for quality and longevity.I have had the dishwasher 15 years and the washer and dryer 10 now and going strong.Rob
Unfortunately, my first of three kids started college, and I am already dieing of "maltuition".
ok thats funny, mind if I use that one.If it were me I suppose I would run it until it fails completely. If it is the bearing you will not hurt anything that will not have to be replaced anyhow.Rob
Sure, use the phrase. Thanks for your help.
