I have a Viking DDBB refrigerator. The freezer seems to be broken. We just cleaned it out because ice had built up on the floor of freezer. Now it won't get cold. The display shows flashing lights in the temperature display. What should I do?
Optional Information: Make: Viking Model: DDBB Already Tried: Pressing all the different buttons on display. Turning entire refrigerator power off and on. Waiting 24 hours to see if freezer will get cold.
Hi,My name is XXX XXX I will try and help with your problem. Was it working fine, outside of the ice in the floor of the freezer, before you cleaned it?Also can you give me a complete model number. Please keep in mind,I am not there and need your input to correctly diagnose your problem.
The freezer was working fine; just had trouble getting the drawer to shut because of ice build up and because the drawer hardware is slightly broken. The model is DTBB series. It's 36"wx84"hx24"d from 2004?
I can't tell for sure, but I think the refrigerator part is warming up too.
dtbb is not a model #,but that is ok.is it a side by side or bottom freezer?
Bottom freezer. Where would I find the model #?
Give me a few to look for info on your model
do you hear any fans running in either freezer or fridge?
I hear the fan in the fridge. I think I hear the fan in the freezer but I'm not sure. I did notice that the freezer fan stopped while I was removing the ice.
Can you tell if the compressor is running also?
I hate to ask, what's the compressor and how would I know if it's running?
Do not worry about asking questions, you see your fridge and I see hundreds so please aski if I am not clear.
The compressor is on the top,and you should hear a hum and it should be warm up there
On the top? As in, above the fridge in the grill or inside the frig? It feels slightly cold when I open the door (and I pushed the "Max frig" button) but it doesn't feel like it usually does. Meanwhile, I can tell you that the lights on the left side of the display blink in a pattern that makes them look like they are moving to the right. The light indicating that the freezer is in the display is on. I'm going to check the sounds now.
I don't think the compressor is on. That or it's very quiet. There's a low hum.
I stood on a chair and listened at the grill on top.
The grill on top does not feel warm.
Did you hear a fan running behind the grill
no
just the one inside the fridge
In order to go any further,I will need you to take apart various parts of this unit and do some voltage checks. You feel comfortable with that?
How do I check voltage?
Do you have a volt meter capable of checking voltage and ohms and know how to use it?
I think so. I'll have to check my husband's shop tools. It might take a few minutes, how can I get back in touch with you? Also, I may need help figuring out how to use it. (Hubby not home at the moment.)
Also, I've been having trouble with my internet connection so I need to know how to contact you if the connection is lost.
I am sorry to say you will probably need to call someone knowledgeable in trouble shooting electrical circuts.I would never be able to teach you how to use a meter properly in this forum in the time alloted.I wil be more than happy to refer you to a local company that is Viking authorized to do the repair.
Is there anything else that I can check without a volt meter?
Also, can you give me instructions on what to look for, that way, when my husband gets back he can check. He's very good at electrical wiring.
The only other suggestion is to remove power to the unit for 30 seconds, not just turn it off at the control panel on the fridge.
You mean unplug it? It's a built-in. I'm not sure how it comes out.
Could I turn it off at the circuit breaker?
I mean turn off the breaker
Do you know what the flashing lights mean?
I will try to turn off at circuit breaker. What does that do?
It may reset the control
Okay. I'll try. Could you recommend a repair person in Brooklyn, New York in case resetting doesn't work?
What is your zip code?

here is a list of authorized servicers in your area
It sounds like the is a problem with the control,or a sealed system problem. Not really something I can talk you through fixing. It is a very complex machine
I tried turning the power off at the circuit breaker. It didn't seem to help because the lights inside are still flashing. Do you think a 7 year-old Viking frig is worth fixing? I just don't want to throw money away when what I really need is to replace it.
It is definately worth fixing, life should be 20 years + and replacement is well into the thousands
Thank you. You've been very helpful.
Thanks,do you need anything else?
No.
