my GE Profile oven (bought 5 years ago) suddenly this morning won't heat up! The temp indicator gets to 100 and stays there. Oven temp hardly 100 if that. Tried 'convection' version too and no go. Thank god it worked thursday, but i remember now that a couple of times Thursday i got a little whiff of gas when i opened it.
Optional Information: Make: GE Model: Profile Already Tried: turning it off and starting over a few times. also tried the 'convection' choice. no good
Hi my name isXXXXX will be assisting you with this problem. Please allow me some time to do research and type a response to each of your posts. The likely problem here is the igniter, Take the floor of the oven out then the flame spreader, At the back of the burn tube you will see the igniter.Set the oven for 350 and then watch the igniter for a minute, If it does not glow disconnect it from the wire harness and test it with a ohms meter, If as I suspect it reads open then you should replace it.If the igniter glows then it will still be bad, A good igniter will glow bright yellow to the point you cant look at it, If the igniter glows yellow/orange then its bad and will need to be replaced. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Yes can I assist you further?
thanks, Mike. would the ignitor issue explain why i caught a whiff of gas a few times on thanksgiving (when the oven was working, thank god)? Also, I don't have a meter - or the nerve to try your good suggestion - so i'll have to call a repair guy. is this a big? mediium? small job? Can you give me a VERY ROUGH BALLPARK estimate of what i should expect this to cost? (i'm in nyc unfortunately.) can you recommend anyone in nyc?
The whiff of gas was because the igniter is not getting hot enough quick enough for when the valve opens. This is a pretty minor job, it would cost around $150 depending on region, any appliance company should be able to take care of this fairly quickly.
