I have a front load washing machine (purchased in around 2002 by the previous owner's of our house). When it goes into the final spin cycle it makes a very loud noise. When we look at the tub as it spins we noticed that as it spins it moves a little bit to the left and right (not sure if this is normal or part of the problem). Is this something worth having a technician in to check / repair? Or does it likely need to be replaced?

Hi my name isXXXXX will try and help you. What kind of a noise does it make? Is it a whirring/jet airplane noise, does it sound like something is loose and banging around inside during the spin cycle?Does it shake and vibrate a lot?
Doesn't sound like anything is loose or banging inside. It shakes and makes a lot of noise as if it were about to explode! Ha! I checked the legs to ensure it wasn't just off balance.
Ok you have a bad tub bearing it's probably not worth repairing parts and labor would be in the range of 600-700 dollars, i doubt any of the parts are under warranty but there is a chance that the inner stainless steel tub is covered if that is the case then it would be about 200 less on the repair, most people at this point choose not to repair the unit, the typical appliance life is between 8-12 years.
Thanks. How urgently do I need to get a new washer? Will this lead to the unit failing altogether shortly? Or if I can tolerate the noise, should I be able to wait a bit before replacing it?
You probably have time it's more of a noise issue now, what to look for is water on the floor, when it gets real bad it will start to leak at that point it's done. So check for that after each use, it typically starts as a slow leak but if it wobbles a lot then it could wear a hole through the door boot so check that too. Eventually the bearing will lock up and it won't do anything.
Thank you. Final question. The dimensions of each of my washer and dryer are:
27" wide
34" high
25.5" deep
I'm fairly space constrained so will need to keep one of the dimesions under 26" so I can fit it through the doorway.
Any chance you might recommend a replacement model? Or might point me in the right direction?
Thanks for your help.
That's a fairly small width, you must have the sport models which is what you will have to stick with most models are 30 inches wide on the dryers, as far as models those change on a monthly basis, if your looking for the front loaders then the whirlpool duet sports are a good choice, other than that when you are shopping for one bring your tape measure just to be sure.
