Hi my name isXXXXX will be assisting you with this problem. Please allow me some time to do research and type a response to each of your posts. Can you open the freezer door and look at the lower panel in the rear. do you see any frost on this panel?
hi mike, there is a thin layer of frost at the bottom of the panel
Ok the problem here is the defrost system. This has failed, You will need to remove the panel at the rear inside the freezer, once the panel is out you will see the evaporator (looks like the radiator on a car) melt the ice on this with a hair dryer then below the evaporator you will see the defrost heater, Test this with a ohm meter, if it reads open then you should replace it. If the heater reads good (continuity) then you will need to replace the defrost thermostat/sensor normally located at the top of the evaporator. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. ok. i will do that
Ok thanks.Have a great weekend!
heater tests good. I can't locate the defrost thermostat. The fan is above the evaporator but there doesn't seem to be any other electrical controls inside the freezer
Ok let me look up the model number, will post back in a minute
Unfortunately my system just crashed so i cant look that model number up for a bit, what you are looking for would look like one of the pictures below. Its either going to be a sensor or a bi metal thermostat.
ah, ok found it. thanks!
Your welcome.Mike
in searching for a replacement part online is see that this supposed to be open at 48F and closed at 18F. At room tempeture it is open and when I put it in our other freezer for 10 minutes or so it is closed (0 ohms). That makes me think this part is good. Or could it still be bad and jsut not activating at the right temps?
If the bi metal is reading open above 48f or at room temp then reading continuity at 18f it is good, the only other problem this could be is the defrost control.I have not been able to pull this up because my sears system is down, out of curiosity was the evaporator covered in frost/ice? is the freezer on top?
top freezer. evaporator had a small amount of ice that melted rather quickly with heat. i was trying sears for the part no and having the same problem on their site.
was there ice on the floor of the freezer?
no, just in and under the aluminum drip tray, but on the floor as a whole
Ok well it sounds more like the defrost drain is blocked. To clear this problem follow the directions below, then put the unit back together and give it around 24 hours to start working correctly. If you still have a problem then come back to this question for further assistance.Remove the shelf’s and food from the freezer then take out the panel at the back of freezer. You will see ice build up in the drain pan below the evaporator. Melt ice with hairdryer/heat gun then once the ice is clear you will see a hole in pan that leads to drain tube. Pour some hot water in pan, wait a couple minutes. Mop up water and repeat this step 2-3 times....once you have done this find some flexible curtain wire or electrical wire and poke it down the hole until you see the water drain.
ok. have to leave the house now so I will try that later.thanks.
Ok thanks
hello mike.i got the drain opened and put everything back together. let it run overnight. The freezer is in the safe zone but the fridge is still warm, about 55. It looks like the fan above the evaporator is not running at all. Is the fan bad, or is there some other control;l that might be bad?ThanksLarry
Ok yes the evaporator fan is your problem this should be running all the time.Replace the fan motor and you should be all set.Mike
thanks
