Expert's Answer

Hi,Welcome to Just Answer, My name is XXXXX XXXXX forward to helping you today.

FL means the door fails to lock, check for a faulty door lock solenoid that is the most common reason for this error. Also check for loose wiring connections, and you need to check for a faulty door lock switch or faulty door lock sensor switch if all of those check out you have a bad control board, most likely however you have a faulty solenoid in your door lock assembly we replace a lot of these in this machine it's hardly ever the control board and usually not a door lock switch, we usually replace the entire door lock assembly, but if you have a voltmeter you can test the switches to make sure they are good, if you do find a bad switch you can order just the switch, I am sending you a video to show you how to test the switch click this blue link, http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Interlock-Switch/22002162/454909?modelNumber=MAH5500BWW#repairHelpVideoTabs if the switch checks out replace the door lock assembly, here is a link to that, http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Latch-Assembly/22003593/893839?modelNumber=MAH5500BWW .

Expert's Answer

Okay inside the dispenser towards the front when you open up the top. There is a clear fluorescent green plastic line, you can see it in this picture, what you need to do is open up your dispenser and remove the four screws that hold the cover, you should see this line, it is the emergency unlock, you need to get a hold of it and pull it to open the door, once the doors open there'll be screws holding the hinges and the door remove those and remove the two across from it and the U-shaped front part will come off the machine, once that's done there are two screws you can take out on either side to lift the top to access the lock assembly, it's definitely a faulty lock assembly if the doors locked in will not unlock, replace the lock /latch assembly, this should take care of your issue, you can try unlocking the door and then shutting it again and see if the machine will run correctly try putting in drain it's possible it's just stuck in maybe what you got it open it will run correctly but I wouldn't count on that. Hope this helps, thanks, Bryan

ok,that worked to get the door open, but still shows FL when I try to start it again, the machine is 9 years old, do you think it is worth fixing?

Accepted Answer

Do you have a voltmeter and are able to check the switches like it shows in the video? If it's just a switch it's only $16.00 I believe but if it's the whole lock mechanism it's $92 so that's a decision you have to make on your own. Does the machine running good otherwise? Have you had any major issues with it? Is it loud in the spin cycle? If that's loud in the spin cycle it could be the main rear bearing is going if it sounds like a jet plane taking off and in that case I would not recommend replacing the door switch assembly because the rear bearing is about to go but if it's quiet and runs good it may be worth putting the money into. But you need to test to make sure you replace the correct part, I hope this information is useful however, thanks and have a great weekend, Bryan
