Optional Information: Make: viking Model: VCBB362L88 Already Tried: nothing
Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today. So this is probably the most common failure for these Viking downdraft units. The problem is that there are 2 possibilities that can cause this problem: a bad control board, and a bad touch control board (which is part of the top console). The problem is that most Viking technicians like myself will carry a remote up and down switch to plug into the board to determine if the control console is bad or if the control board is bad. There is really no way of testing which part is faulty any other way. I'd say about 90% of the time the control console on top is the faulty part that needs to be replaced, but both parts are about $300-400 so unless you want to guess and replace the part, I'd say it might be best to call a Viking technician out so they can determine which part is faulty and you don't end up buying a $300-400 part that you don't need. That decision is up to you of course.
thats great but how does this help me
you now know what two parts can cause this problem. I can't control the problem you have with your downdraft, I can only tell you what can cause it. You are more than welcome to replace the control console if you wanted to and that's likely the problem, but again you can't test it so if it's not bad you'll have to get a main relay control board as well.
do you have the part numbers of the 2 items?
unfortunately not. Viking doesn't have local look-ups and distributers, but you can call Viking themselves or Kimball distributing and give them your model to look up the parts. Kimball is the distributer for Viking----it's about the only company that handles their parts this way.
one thing that confuses me is there is power to the front board , the only thing is i cant control itbuy not having control will this increase energy usageand is this unit a energy hog are new unit what % better for energy use
There isn't much different in energy usage between the older and newer units at all. But as far as not being able to control it from the front board, it will not increase the energy usage at all.
so i really do not need to replace this? what are the pro and cons of not fixing this
you can control your downdraft from the front control board if you fix it, that's the only advantage/disadvantage.
would you put all this money into fixing it or not?
If I owned Viking, probably. If would need to be fixed if you sold your house and the repairs are fairly minimal in cost compared to a new Viking unit. But then again, I can't afford to have Viking myself so the cost seems a lot for repairs.
do you have a phone number for the parts place?and how long does this unit last and is a good unit,i am trying to figure out if i should put the money into it or notso you say that a brand new unit not just viking but any of them are not very much better on energy
that's correct, there isn't going to be much of a difference in energy. Usually the units wil last 5-10 years before something fails. And then maybe 4-8 years before somethign else breaks? so on and so forth. As they get older they break more and more often.Phone numbers are: Viking: 1.800.467.2665.Kimball: 1.801.466.0569.Good luck and have a nice day.
