We have a Maytag refrigerator model MRB2456DEW. Serial number(NNN) NNN-NNNNB. Over several days the temperature slowly increased. The last two days we heard a single click, waited a moment, heard a second click, then 15-20 minutes later would hear the clicks again. Last night the temperature became too high for the food to be safe. Any ideas? Thanks. XXXXX

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today. This means that your compressor is overloading and cutting out. It will turn off for a few minutes and then try again over and over. The first thing you want to do is open the freezer door and make sure the back isn't covered in frost and you hear the fan inside the freezer running. If all that checks good then something is going on with the sealed system on the back of the refrigerator.Pull the refrigerator forward and unplug the refrigerator. Remove the lower back access panel and locate your large black round compressor. There is a small plastic box attached to the side of the compressor with several wires going into it. This is your overload relay. Pull the overload relay off the compressor and shake it. If it rattles, then it needs to be replaced. If it doesn't rattle, then you likely have a bad compressor and you'll need to call a technician in order to replace the compressor.
I have removed the back. The relay does not rattle. I have the same clicking noise. This compressor was replaced once approximately five years ago. Is it normal for a compressor to fail in five years. This is kept in a house with a stable temperature of 74 degrees. There is some lint in the back, but not a lot. Do I have a compressor problem?
It does sounds like you have a compressor problem unfortunately. 5 years isn't a long time for a compressor to last, but then again I've seen them fail in less than a year. It's up to you if you want to put the money into the repair but the cost is about $500-600 normally.
Do I need to do anything else before calling a technician? I am in the John Deere repair business. We repair a lot of air conditioning on farm equipment so I am familiar with systems. If there is nothing else to do I do appreciate your diagnosis. Thanks.
There really isn't much else you can do except replace the compressor which you can do if your licensed to do so and knew how.
