Help. We have an old Gaggenau electric hot-air oven EB 676-6...There is a constant clicking sound emanating from somewhere in the cooktop. Based on another Web search, we tried fiddling with the round, circular tops of the burners and "seating" them differently. Didn;t work. Any ideas???
Optional Information: Make: Gaggenau Model: Electric hot-air over EB 676-6 Already Tried: See above
Hello
Hi.
Our stove is from 1984. We recently moved to an old apartment
ok so you are getting a spark like clicking from the cooktop?
A clicking sound. No "spark" can be seen.
Alright you could have a couple different issues. You may have a bad spark module and they do go bad casuing that clicking issue. Can you see any of the burner electrodes sparking at all while it is making noise and secondly can you still get the burners to light normally
They are all sparking and we can get the burners to light normally.
So they all spark while it is making that noise correct?
Yes
I have no idea what a "spark module" is, BTW
Alright then the problem you have is one of the burner switches is stuck closed. You usually can see the switch when you pull the knobs off. Can you see them
The switch has two wires going to it under each knob
Let me check. Might be awhile
Just come back when you find them....One of the switches is either stuck or defective that is what is causing your issue
Well we pulled off a knob. It stopped for a second. It went on again when we put the knob back on. However, we opened the oven door and then it stopped.
Then we pulled off another knob and it stopped right away without opening the oven door
My wife just told me that the first knob we pulled out was broken, according to a repairman. Just give me a second to get more details from her.
Hi. This is the wife. There is one knob that I was concerned about because the dot on the knob indicated it was off when I was really on...I called repairman...he said that the cooktop and stove date from 1984 and there are no longer parts available for it so I would have to leave the knob as is...which was fine...but then this clicking happened tonight which is probably the first time we used both the cook top and oven at the same time...I pulled the "broken" knob off just now and the clicking stopped....I found that if I left that knob attached but not all the way pushed in...the clicking stays off..but if I push the knob all the way in it will turn that burner on normally
Stumped, huh? :)
There seems to be some relationship between the clicking on top and the oven below, no?
Are you still there? Hello??????
yes
The spark module controls all lighting
I believe you have a defective switch. This is the most likely issue. On your unit do you have a knob that controls the oven lighting as well
Yes.
I am almost positive you have a switch under the oven knob as well.
ok. What do you suggest we do? BTW, we could not see any "wires" when we pulled out the knobs...
The switches are on the shafts behind the trim panel. The Gaggenau unit are not the easiest to work on so depending on your skill level this might be beyond your capabilities....so how mechanically inclined are you?
My wife tried to pull the oven knob off and couldn't do it. Neither could I. I could see what appear to be a shaft behind the knob but that's it. I am not very mechanically inclined and am afraid to pull really hard and force it.
The knobs should just pull off unless you see a set screw on the sid of the knob somewhere...otherwise they do pull off
Nope. Not the oven knob
Did you find the switches aam talking about?
You mean behind the trim panel? No. I will need to remove the whole panel. do you want me to try?
Yes you can and yes I apologoze we call it the trim panel but it is the whole console panel
I think it might be beyond our capacity as we would need to dismantle the whole thing and I am afraid we will screw it up. It seems like we probably should call a repairman. But as my wife says, there are no part for this. So what could would that do?
I meant what good would that do?
Well the switches that are used on the valves are very common, same as the spark module. Any decent tech will know how to get a cross part for those things...that should not be an issue.
I work on these things all the time and the problem you have is completely fixable
Ok thank you. Maybe my wife was misinformed or maybe he was talking about different parts. Is there anything else you think you could do to help us? I think you did help us discover how to solve the problem, at least temporarily, by pulling out the knob(s). Based on what you've been told, do you think we need to do anything else? This is the wife: I already had a repair person in to look at the knobs and he said that because of its age we cannot repair this cooktop/oven anymore...but maybe he is wrong... his company was BSH Home Appliances and it was the place the former owner told us to call...do you know anyplace in the NYC area that might be better?
I would go to Angie's list and find a better service company. They can be fixed I do them all the time even though parts are no longer available. For spark ignition parts this is should not be a problem...a lot of times you get lazy techs or incompetent techs that just don;'t know what they are doing and take the easy way out. A lot of times you can clean the switches and get them to work again.
ok thanks for your help we will try to find someone else to come and look...I hope you are right and it's fixable because we like the cooktop and oven, they cook well...though the knobs get hot which is weird...anyway we will push accept now! Thanks.
