Customer Question

My whirlpool dishwasher is 7 years old and installed when the house was built. Have never had a problem till now. Recently left my home for 4 week vacation and locked off the water in the house. After 2 weeks my neighbor checked and found the floor soaking wet in the kitchen. The water was coming from the dishwasher. The same thing happened to my neighbor last summer. Why would my dishwasher literally flood my kitchen and family room when the water had been locked off?

Optional Information:
Make: Whirlpool
Model: ?

Already Tried:
Insurance claim filed. Remediation services are in with fans etc to dry out sub-flooring. 50% of hardwood floor had to be taken up. Remediation also in my crawl space.

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.

If you turned the water of to your dishwasher this can cause the dishwasher to actually flood over time and leak. The reason is because the most valves won't shut the water off completely, they will still allow little drips through the water line, and that can cause the water to build up and leak through the water line. The electronic solenoid requires a minimum of 40 psi or else it will not seal up and it will allow water to seap through. By shutting the water off to your house, you get almost 0 psi which is why it will leak.
