Customer Question

hallo there,i have a smeg WMFAB 16P which has stopped working and keeps tripping the fuse on the spin cycle. Is there a simple answer to my problem or a new part which you could tell me that i need to get. Thanks

Hiya,
When you select spin only, does it trip straight away or does it got through some of the various speeds first?

Thanks

Hi , i 've tried half a dozen times, trips either straightaway or more often a minute into the cycle after drum has begun to turn

Expert:  Techdesk replied 2 years ago.
Hiya,
OK, thanks for that.

How are your diy skills?
Would you be able to take the machine apart and check the motor?
If you can, you need to first of all check the carbon brushes to see if they've worn down.

Thanks

Hi again, i opened up and looked at brushes. One is with clean curved edge about 25mm beyond coded numbers, other was a bit more worn down plus frayed at the edge

Hiya,
OK, the clean one is good, the other one may be causing your problem.

Is the armarture of the motor ok?
(the segments the brushes press onto).

Is there a lot of carbon dust in the motor?
Are there any raised segments?

Thanks
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Hi , the armature looks ok and is smooth to the touch where the brushes press, slightly stiff making a revolution but i'm not sure how freely it should turn. There was some dust , not much, which fellwhen i was removing brushes. So do you think that one brush is most likely cause?

Expert:  Techdesk replied 2 years ago.
Hiya,
It's very possible.
If it's not tripping during the wash and rinse, then it would suggest one of two things.

1, the carbon brush is arcing when it tries to spin, and in turn trips the mains.
2. there's a fault in the motor windings for the spin that trips the mains.

The first, you can fit new brushes and see if it cures the problem.

If not, then it's a new motor most likely.

Check it out, see how it goes and get back to me if you need more help.
(If you need a new motor, you may be better off with a fixed price repair from the likes of British Gas or Repaircare).

Hope this helps
Thanks
