KevinWhiteJA :

Hi, welcome to Just answer

KevinWhiteJA :

Please tell me its complete model number

KevinWhiteJA :

and how old is it ?

Customer:

KG491NA90GB/03

Customer:

age I assume is 11 years

KevinWhiteJA :

are you sure this is correct model number KG491NA90GB/03

Customer:

other details on plate are, FD 8712 272711........Type KAKGN4901

KevinWhiteJA :

alright KG49NA90GM/03 is the correct model number

KevinWhiteJA :

the sound that comes from the fridge, is it like a fan hitting ice or a fan motor going bad

KevinWhiteJA :

or something else ?

Customer:

fan hitting ice

KevinWhiteJA :

OK, you will have to unplug the unit and check the rear for ice build up ... the problem is that the defrost system of the unit has failed and will need replacement...this defrost system contains defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If any of these goes bad the refrigerator will not defrost

KevinWhiteJA :

replacing both of them will cost you around £110

KevinWhiteJA :

after the ice is removed from the rear try to plug it back and check if the problem is still there...if you still hear the sound then it is the evaporator fan itself that is bad and will need replacement

KevinWhiteJA :

if there is no sound then the defrost system will need replacement

Customer:

just had a look found no signof ice but a small (tablespoon full) puddle

KevinWhiteJA :

try to clean it and check if the noise is still there

Customer:

wiped over all pipes and other bits ,still noise

KevinWhiteJA :

and I believe you have cleaned everything from inside the rear

KevinWhiteJA :

if yes then the problem is with the fan assembly that will need replacement

KevinWhiteJA :

will cost you £110 + repair charges

Customer:

for appliance that age what option?..repair / replace

KevinWhiteJA :

if it is the fan replacing it is fine however, the cost including repair charges etc will come around £180

Customer:

thanks for help & advice
