Hotpoint Ice Diamond model RF06 Fridge Freezer not working.

Resolved Question:

Hotpoint Ice Diamond model RF06 Fridge Freezer not working. There is power to the motor but neither the fridge or freezer are working and no light in the fridge. Defrosted freezer during the week and came down to -10C when switched on again. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hiya,
Have you checked the bulb inside the fridge?

At the bottom rear of the machine is the compressor, a black pot shaped item.
Is it running?
If it is, is it very hot?

Thanks
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Bulb has blown.

We noticed unit wasn't working at lunchtime so it probably failed during the morning. Compressor isn't running and has just a hint of warmth in it now.

Just replaced bulb but still no light.

Hiya,
It's very likely the thermostat has failed.

Does the machine have a fast freeze switch?
If it does, switch it on.
Does the compressor run?

Sorry, don't have the manual at home so I check.

Do you have, and can you use, a multimeter?

Thanks
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No fast freeze switch. Only control is a dial in the fridge and nothing happens when on lowest setting. Manual says no action is necessary if freezing fresh food as freezer automatically maintains *** standard.

We do have a multimeter and can use it.

Hiya,
OK, thanks for that.

You need to gain access to the thermostat.

Where is the control for the thermostat? on the light fitting or on the facia?

Thanks
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

The thermostat is on the light fitting.

Hiya,
OK, thanks for that.

Unplug the appliance.
Take the light housing off so you can access the wiring on the thermostat.

Once you get to it, let me know the wires and the connections they go onto.

Depending on the thermostat fitted it will be marked 3, 4 and 6 or possibly 4 and 6.

While you have the light fitting off, take the bulb out.
Look into the light fitting and you'll see the copper strip across the bottom. Lift this strip up a little, don't snap it though.
Then refit the bulb.

Thanks
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Connections are 4, 6, 3.

Hiya,
OK, take the wires off 4 and 6.
Link them together temporarily.

Loosely reassemble.

Plug in.
Does the compressor start up?

If it does, you'll need to obtain and fit a new thermostat to cure the problem.

Let me know what happens

Thanks
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Eureka!!! Compressor started up. So looks like a new thermostat tomorrow. I really appreciate all your help.

Hiya,
You're welcome.
Don't leave it running like this though, it will burn out the compressor as there's no temperature control.

Refit the wiring as it should be and give the thermostat a couple of good taps with your screwdriver handle.

Reassemble and see if it runs.

If it does, it may tide you over till you get a new thermostat.

Good luck with the repair.

Hope this helped
Thanks
