Hi, my name is Mike and I have been in the home improvement and repair field for 20 years. I will be very glad to help you today. Do you have any ice forming around the vent in the freezer or at the bottom of the fridge? Any ice buildup anywhere that you can see?
It is a tall freezer - no signs of ice forming anywhere.
What about on the evaporator? Any ice on it? There is no ice forming inside the freezer around the vent?
No ice on evaporator or around vent
You removed the back and inspected the evaporator and there is no ice at all?
I moved the freezer so i could view the back. The evaporator or reservoir sits on top of the compressor that is very hot - no ice at all.
Is the temperature reading colder than the setting?
sorry that should be -no
The temperature is not getting cold?
The temperature is reading -4 instead of -18
Well yes it does sound like the compressor is failing then. Soon it will no longer cool. Is it still under warranty? Any dust on the coils on the back?
Not under warranty- no dust on coils.
no matter what setting thermostat is at it has reduced to -4 - it was -12 this morning
Yes when they start to fail they can begin to decline rapidly. If you are quite handy you could replace the compressor but really that is one of those things that really is not a normal do it yourself project.
So, tell me Canuck - what would you charge to replace the compressor - and how long will it last - in years
I would charge about $450.00 if I supplied the compressor. It should last in excess of 7-10 years.
Sorry. I am a Canadian in the U.S. Yes. It would hardly be worth replacing it if you had someone do it. There may be a blockage in the freon lines that may clear up on it's own. We can be hopeful of that.
I am in the UK and why are you quoting me in dollars?
You were asking how much I would charge. I would assume you were asking that to get an idea of how much it would cost you if you had someone there do it for you? So if I were there it would be about £270
