May I have the model # ***** your fridge and the approximate age?
Also when you say the motor come on and shuts off are you speaking of a fan or the compressor?

Hi Janice, please do me a favor. Turn off the fridge for 5 full minutes, then turn it on by raising the thermostat. Please let me know if you then hear the motor for a second again?

Hi Michael have done that already and the motor comes on for a couple of seconds and I have tried turning it off and leaving the door open to the freezer and the same happens it is now switched off

this isn't the thermostat I can tell you that much so far.
This is caused by a failing compressor.
You can try a device called a Hard Start, in place of the compressors start relay. Its not expensive and super easy to install.
This works to cure this issue about 70% of the time;-)
A good place to get that part is Espares: phone 0844 9777 888.
