Thank you! What exactly is the oven doing (or not doing, as the case may be)?

Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

Did you have it off at the mains or at the controller on the oven?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the oven does not switch on at all. Gas hob working fine
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it's been off at the mains now back on
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

So none of the knobs or buttons respond with any change at all?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
exactly
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

The control has failed for some reason. The timing is pretty odd in that it was working fine before cleaning. Did you move the elements enough that a wire may have come loose and shorted when the power was turned back on?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
that is possible
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the heating element slipped down a few months ago but it clicked back in and has worked ever since
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

It sounds like the control may have been damaged from a short. I would turn the mains off and pull the oven out to access the back and check for loose wires. If all found to be intact, if the control remains the same when powered back up, the oven controller will likely need to be replaced. Let me know what you find.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
that is easier said than done - oven is part of fitted kitchn and doesn't slide out
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

Yes, it will not be easy, I am sure. However, it will be necessary, even just to replace the oven control.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
i won't be able to do that today i'm afraid
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 year ago.

I understand, you can post back at anytime, there is no time limit.
