Customer Question

I have a 1987 325is and I believe that oil is being sucked into the intake manufold via the valve cover vent hose. I recently replaced the air filter and notice oil in the top side of the filter. Additionally, when I start the car a plume of blue smoke come the exhaust. Is there a valve that needs to be changed under the valve cover. I am not sure of what keeps oil from go down the vent hose to the intake manafold. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

normanahoyt :

Hello, my name is XXXX XXX I am here to assist you.

normanahoyt :

The crankcase breathing system is quite basic on your BMW. Typically they didn't have any issues, however, what you describe sounds like it has started to create a suction through the valve cover. What you need to do is remove the valve cover and clean the airways in it. I don't recall if there is a lid you can remove or if it is riveted into place. If the lid on the underside of the valve cover is removable just take it off and clean it all very well, reassemble and your good to go. If it is not removable then you need to put the valve cover to soak in something that will breakdown the old hardened oil sludge. Once you get the airways cleared it should stop pulling oil into the air cleaner
