Resolved Question:

My 05 X3 2 litre diesel has developed an intermittent starting problem. ECU has been checked and new fuel pump installed to no effect? What do you suggest?

what exactly does the car do when it does not start?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Engine turns over but fails to 'fire'. Temperature guage moves immediately into red zone even though engine is cold. After several attempts and waiting up to 10 minutes engine comes to life. Problem is particularly bad in morning

I would suspect a faulty temp sensor causing a fuel mixture problem.

I would suggest you have this tested for / monitored by a BMW specialist garage with equipment to do so.
