this is a fault with one of the components on the idrive communicatoin network, which is taking the entire system offline. this is not uncommon, but can have several causes.
this can be an internal fault in the main head unit / computer, or a faulty in one other component such as the bluetooth/phone module, the amplifier, the power supply module, etc.
unfortunately due to this system's complex and prioretary design, specialized test equipment is required to diagnose the system - this unfortunately means a trip to the main dealer or properly equipped garage that can carry out this type of testing. Additionally, when a component is replaced in this system, the system needs to be reprogrammed - again with the specialized BMW equipment (BMW unfortunately keeps customers on the hook for proprietary diagnostics and repairs in this manner)
the most common cause is the bluetooth module, but this is not to the exclusion of other causes.
