Steve i have 330ci bmw automatic 2001 model auto,my gear

Hi Steve i have 330ci bmw automatic 2001 model auto,my gear select is having problem when put in drive it makes thumping nose to drive off the sign on speedo where select sign shows p/n/d/ does not show the red sign shows cog that is round circle ,the car drives ok once select drive no problem when driving .Can you please tell me what could be the problem .Some times it is ok it woud not thump.Thank you

What diagnostics have been carried out so far?

diagnostics done engineside/gearbox side no fault only after selecting gear the sign shows red cog when driving.

what was checked/tested and how, and with what equipment?

if the transmission light is on, there should be a fault that can be read with appropriare diagnostic equipment

if the shop you are using can't read a code, they likely dont have the proper equipment

your symptoms suggest a problem with the slector switch or possibly an internal fluid issue.

a proper fault scan and test plan on a factory BMW tool will be required to verify.
