Do you think it could be the gear box itself? If so...why is it running in 5th and reverse?

the gearbox is made up of many parts

however, there are a lot of things that are so expensive to fix on a gearbox that when one does fail, the gearbox is replaced or completely overhauled, so in this frame, yes, you could need a full overhaul or replacement

it runs in reverse and 5th because it is designed to when locked in limp mode

ultimately there is some fault that is triggering limp mode, but when in limp mode, it is designed to lock in high gear when in forward, and to still work in reverse
