Customer Question

I am a VAT registered sub contractor (Brick lawyer - labour only). I am working for a contractor building new houses. The contractor has told me that I should not charge him VAT on my invoices for my brick laying services. He tells me that he is not charging
VAT on his invoices to the contractor above him. Is this correct should I be charging him VAT? and if not what documetation do I need to obtain from the contractor I invoice to protect myself in case I get a VAT inspection and have to demonstrate why I did
not charge Output tax on my invoices.
