My discovery tdi5 is sluggish at starting when cold it takes five minutes. It had just been to garage and had gasket changes and there was a fuel leak which has been fixed. It is now worse at starting. On 42000 miles on it. When plugged into computer it lacks in compression? Run s well when going

Hello and Welcome to justanswer..

My name is MIKE - Im happy to help you with your query -re your Landrover Discovery troubles.

With this issue that you have - if it has been determined that the engine has general low compression, that will certainly account for your starting troubles - It will run ok when running though you may find it slightly underpowered, it depends, all can be different -

The usual reason why this would suffer in this way would be the valve seats in the cylinder head - and / or valves, burning or at least not having a good enough gas tight seal.

Of course it could also be excess wear on the pistons / bores - and / or compression control rings (on the pistons ) .. all this needs to be checked --but sad to say, this needs to have the cylinder head off to check. Im somewhat surprised that the head gasket was determined to be the fault as it was unlikely -and too - that when the engine was stripped - why the above checks haven't been done to find other causes / reasons for the troubles you have with the loss of compression -

Im assuming all else has already been checked as they have done what they have so far - but now, thats the way forward on this one. I suggest that you have what's called a "leak down" test done - this is much better than a compression test and will help to id somewhat between the faults as mentioned above before an engine strip down... This needs the proper equipment to do this test - as its not been mentioned or only a compression test was done, Im assuming the garage in question doesn't have that equipment - but really at this stage this needs to be done now before you do anything as to stripping the engine again -and then progress from there with the results of that test.
