Resolved Question:

I have just bought a 2002 MG ZT/T with a 2.5litre 190ps engine. The car runs well and does not exhibit any hesitation but there is a rattle from the vicinity of the inlet manifold. I haven't removed the plastic cover to investigate further but I can say the noise does not transmit into the cabin. It's only heard when the bonnet is open.
Is this symptomatic of any common fault with this engine?
The previous owner said he had been quoted £700 to fix it.

Mark :

Hello, my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will try help you with this.

Mark :

This is caused by the air flaps inside the manifold.

Mark :

You can either fit a new manifold or remove the one you have and then modify it by removing the flaps.

Mark :

The flaps are there to improve low speed torque by lengthening the air tract.

Mark :

You won't really feel much difference though by removing them. Infact you might get a bit more power but I wont guarantee that fact.
