Getting a groaning sound whenever I have the steering wheel

Resolved Question:

Getting a groaning sound whenever I have the steering wheel hard right. This happens when the engine is cold, either first thing in the morning or if the car has been sitting around for a few hours. When turning, the car seems to wan't to turn further also.

Hello, my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will try help you with this.

Mark :

Do you get the same sound if you turn it hard left first?

Mark :

Hi

Customer:

Hi Mark.

I can't say I have noticed it on a hard left turn, simply because to get out of my driveway first thing in the morning, I have to turn right. The car seems to be over steering, when turning either left ot right, it seems to want to steer further than I do. Sometimes the steering is stiff, not super stiff, just a bit harder than normal. When driving on the dual carriageway, there seems to be a bit of drift also.

Mark :

Check the fluid level for the power steering.

Mark :

If it needs topped up you MUST use the correct spec oil.

Mark :

It isn't standard power steering oil.

Customer:

Checked that. It's fine.

Mark :

Did you notice what colour the oil was?

Customer:

No I didn't. I'll pop out and have a look.

Customer:

Sorry to take so long Mark. It looks brown, but I'm having to use a torch to see it, because it's dark. Do you reckon the fluid needs changed?

Mark :

It should be green

Mark :

If it is brown then someone may have topped it up with the wrong oil. Red and green make brown

Customer:

Ok Mark, thank you for that. Sometimes I wonder why garages cannot do the right thing, after all, they are the experts. Thanks again for the help. I guess I better go to the Audi dealership and get it checked out.
