Ford Focus 03 just failed NCT on Emissions. Readings are Low idle (810rpm) CO 2.15 vol% HC 601ppm. High idle (2970rpm) Lamnda 0.76 CO 8.32 vol% HC 776ppm. What do I do from there. Just had a service 3 weeks ago. Petrol Car. Heard about synthetic oil? Wld that help?
Hello, my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will try help you with this.
Does the engine run ok? No misfire or lack of power?
Do you have a reading for CO2?
I sound like a twit but it either says CO 2 and reading .15 vol% or CO 2.15 Low idel
and CO 8 with reading .32 vol% or CO 8.32 high idel
CO2 is another gas that some testers will show. I just hoped it would be on the printout.
Does the engine run ok as I asked earlier?
Yeap engin is fine.
These readings suggest the engine is running with a rich mixture.
Possible causes are a blocked air filter, blocked fuel return causing high fuel pressure, engine misfire with a vacuum leak, faulty catalyst.
So you would recomend replacing the catalyst. Is there any point in trying the synthetic oil instead of the normal.
Replacing the oil might be better slightly but I don't think it will make that much of a difference to bring the emissions within limits.
I wouldn't change the catalyst without checking all the other things first.
