Resolved Question:

toyota avensis 1998 2.0l petrol 3s-fe engine - cam belt either snapped or tensioner failed
Is this an interference engine i.e will the valves be damaged by contact with the pistons?
Was driving at about 20mph when engine appeared to stall.
Been quoted £1000 for repair

Hopefully i can help..

Sadly yes the 3SFE engine is indeed an interference engine - so the valve to piston contact is probable..sometimes you might get away with it..but you would only know that once it been retimed back up - only way to know really for definate is to time the engine back up and compression test each cylinder or do a leak down test to see which valves is gone - the cheapest option id say would be another cylinder head/gasket set/timing belt kit and water pump..but obviously it wont be a cheap job..£1000 to do the job?..if thats just one quote..then i would phone around to see who might be able to it a little cheaper to be honest..but at the age of the car spending £1000 on it id say would be bad move..but thats my opinion...I do hope this helps..if you require to ask anything further then please do before you rate
