My ex-wife has a Toyota Auris and the temp gauge goes high

Resolved Question:

My ex-wife has a Toyota Auris and the temp gauge goes high then drops back to normal! Also - the diagnostic ligh comes on then goes off again! What could be the cause?

Hi..there..

Best place to start ideally would be to get the fault codes retrived when the fault occurs - this means getting the car plugged into a scanner to see what fault codes the ecu is logged..if the engine itself isnt actually overheating then it likely the fault could lay with a faulty thermostat or likely the ECT "Engine coolant temp sensor" going faulty if the ecm detects a voltage condition that seems abnormally low or high then it will set a code for that sensor,as the ecu uses that sensor to monitor the coolant temp,aswell as temp guage readings etc..obviously the first things to check before all that is the coolant level and ensure that is correct as per level in the expansion tank...if it is low or coolant is being lost then they need to refill and attach a coolant pressure tester to force the leak to appear and then take steps to rectify as per the leak on the coolant system...But as above thats about the best way forward on this one..
