Ive an intermittent problem concerning gear selection

Customer Question

hi , ive an intermittent problem concerning gear selection on my alfa 147 selespeed. last week i was cruising along nicely , when i parked the car for 5 mins ,then returned and restarted i could not select any gears at all . after approx 1 hour of panic and confusion it went into gear and wasnt a problem for the 10 mile journey home . I have since moved the car about on the property and it seemed ok . later today ive had the same problem and cant get out of neutral . I did check the transmission fluid which appeared low , have since topped it up , but still a problem .a warning light appears for a few seconds when i hold the gear lever in position "selespeed system failure " any ideas ??

Hello Check dipstick both sides. One side has min/max levels when cold. Other side has min/max levels when at 90degrees (hot). and its best to check the fluid level having just moved the gear selector through all the gears and then back to neutral if this is OK then its possible then check for leaks around the high pressure accumulator on top of the box and also check the actual gearbox oil as well as this is seperate to the selespeed mechanisim

Hello OK Can you hear the pump start up when you open the drivers door?if not may simply be a broken relay or the pump has failedif this is OK then Clean electrical connectors with a proper electrical switch cleaner and compressed airandthen replace the 3 position sensors (about 75% of the problems) and recalibrate with Alfadiag. ( the correct diagnostic tool)http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Alfa-Selespeed-sensor-157-147-GT-Coupe-PF2C-Genuine-Magneti-Marelli-part-/291312438504?hash=item43d3930ce8They tell the ECU whereabouts in the gear selection sequence it is. They are simple potentiometers and wear out or get bad contacts. if this still doesn't help then its time to think about stripping the gearbox down to check the actuator is working and clutch is operating correctly so it would probably be best to get an Alfa specialist involved at this pointif you let me know your whereabouts I'll try and locate 1 for you

hi Matt , thanks for a speedy reply . yes the pump does start up when opening the drivers door , i cant get out of neutral or the city setting . I am located just outside of Hereford (hr47ld)

OKif the pump starts then I'd say the next step is to replace the position sensors your nearest specialist looks to be this firm http://www.alfa-tech.co.uk/ they're about 20 miles away but they do offer a mobile service

hi Matt , sorry yes still no joy , its above me . Could i replace the sensors or clean any contacts......where? I have called the company you suggested , had to leave a message , perhaps still off ? wish you were local , cold pay you to sort it , Happy new year anyway.
Expert:  Matt replied 11 months ago.
Helloif you're handy with the spanners then you can fit the new sensors yourself but you'll still need the diagnostic kit to set them up I'd say the alfa specialist should sort you out but it'll be Monday now due to the holidays
