Resolved Question:

Renault Kangoo diesel Dci 1.5 purchased 2010.
Fault: Stalls just after starting cold and will not easily restart
Put key in, turn to get self test and pre-heat glow-plug lights.
Wait until extinguished leaving red hand-brake light and amber engine light
Turn key for starter motor.
Engine starts at low revs. Accelerator has no effect. A few seconds later engine stalls.
Turn the ignition off, on, wait, leaving red hand-brake light and amber engine light
Turn key for starter motor – engine does not start.
Take key out. Wait a few minutes.
Repeat – engine starts.

Hello I think if it was an immobilizer issue then it wouldn't even crank / turn overfrom your description I'd say its a lack of fuel pressureSo its worth checking that the electric pump that feeds the main fuel pump is working correctly, it should run for a few seconds then switch off when you first turn the ignition on. If the connections to this are corroded or damaged then the pump could stop at any time. Check that its relay switches in and out and the relay contacts are clean and bright – replace the relay if in any doubt and do the same for the fuse, ideally measure the voltage at the pump and check its getting 12V the electric lift / fuel pump is mounted in the sender unit under the rear passengers bench seat that folds up to show a plate and its underneath there held by 3 screwsIf the EGR valve is stuck open then this too can effect starting so try disconnecting it to see if this helps or changes anything Could also be an injector leaking fuel back through the overspill pipe, so not getting enough fuel pressure to tell ECU to fire the injectors, this is trickier to find and you’ll need the garage to do a ‘run back’ test to identify which one is the issueLastly it’s also worth considering fitting a new fuel filter as if only slightly blocked this can lower fuel supply pressure and choke the main pump, the pump will be more sensitive to this when its cold as diesel thickens considerably with low temperatures.

Many thanks for the fast response. Some food for thought there. The Kangoo is booked in for next week anyway (for a timing belt replacement) so we can attack the various options then.
