I accidentally left my new car bottom (sidelights) lights on

Customer Question

Hi, I accidentally left my new car bottom (sidelights) lights on all night and turned them off at 5am. I am really worried whether or not this will have an affect on the battery

Hello there,

Does the car start and run ok now?

If it does, the battery should be ok.

I don't know I haven't had the chance to test it yet
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

If it won't start, do you have jumper cables or a jump battery?

Gary

I don't know I haven't had the chance to test it but I am really worried as I have only had the car for 2days and with me being a new driver
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I don't have any jump cables
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

I'm sure your dealer will help you if needed, since you have only just bought the car.

Let me know when you are ready to see if it starts ok.

It might be ok, if everything has been turned off for some time now.

What affect does leaving the side lights have on the battery
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

If it has run the battery down, but the vehicle still starts, then the battery life would still be about average. If it has run the battery down to near flat and won't start, then jump starting the car and driving for 30 minutes should give it enough charge for normal start stop driving.

A battery that has been run flat generally has a shorter life than normal.

Let's see what happens when you try to start it again.

The lights where left on since 9:45-4:00am
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

Over 6 hrs.

Do you have a neighbour with a jump pack, in case you might need it?

Do you have roadside assistance from the manufacturer?

Gary

No would that timeframe have a huge decrease on the battery or a small
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

It depends on the current drain.

Do you know if they LED lights?

If they are, the drain wouldn't be as high as older bulbs.

Gary

I think they are led, it's a brand new 2017 model mini hatch one
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Not entirely too sure though
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

I'm hoping for you that the current drain would be low, even over that 6.25 hr period.

The batteries are also better these days, higher capacity.

Will you be starting it up soon?

Gary

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Starting up I'll be able to do at 7am
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

Ok, so in about 1.5 hrs.

I'll be here for you when you are ready to try.

Iv started the car and it seems to be turning over fine
Expert:  HoldenTech replied 3 months ago.

I was hoping that would be the case.

Sounds like you will be ok now.

Will you going for a drive soon?
