I use a beard oil which I apply, one drop per day, mostly

Resolved Question:

I use a beard oil which I apply, one drop per day, mostly around my mouth (moustache & chin), which contains apricot kernel oil, jojoba seed oil, vitamin E, rosemary leaf oil, peppermint oil, lavender oil, limonene & linalool - I tend to kid my cats on their heads, could I be harming them?

Dr. Susan :

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Dr. Susan :

As with most anything, dose will determine toxicity.

Dr. Susan :

Even water can be toxic if you drink enough of it!

Dr. Susan :

Give me a few moments to check into each individual ingredient.

Dr. Susan :

Off the top of my head, I think all of these are safe in the small quantity they would be in contact with.

Dr. Susan :

I will check to be certain for you though.

Customer:

Thank you.

Customer:

Can you email me when you know?

Customer:

Stupid timing on my part, but I need to be somewhere...

Dr. Susan :

You can come back to this chat at any point.

Dr. Susan :

Don't worry! And you can post back additional questions later if you think of something else.

Customer:

Typo in my question - meant to say, "kiss my cats on their heads", not "kid"...

Dr. Susan :

I figured :)

Customer:

Thank you :) Will check back later.

Dr. Susan :

I have your answer already :)

Dr. Susan :

I checked into each one individually, and the only one that could pose a problem would be the rosemary leaf oil.

Customer:

Would you recommend I stop using it then?

Dr. Susan :

In large quanities we could see acute GI upset or seizures, chronic ingestion of large amounts could cause renal failure.

Dr. Susan :

No, the small amount that they are exposed to should be no problem.

Dr. Susan :

You are using a small quantity of the oil, which is only a small percentage of the rosemary oil.

Customer:

Thank you so much - you've put my mind at ease :)

Dr. Susan :

Then an even smaller amount may be transferred to your cat, and they may groom some of it off and swallow it.

Dr. Susan :

It's negligible
