This is absolutely not normal! This can be a warning sign of urinary obstruction.
Urinary obstruction is an emergency.
I highly recommend taking him to be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
If he is obstructed we need to place a urinary catheter to remove the obstruction.
These cats are hospitalized for several days on IV fluids with the urinary catheter. Some need additional medications for urinary infections, muscle spasms of the urethra, and often have a diet change to prevent crystal and stone formation in the urine.
