Resolved Question:

My cat is about 6. He is litter trained and has been using the tray consistently for a year now. Recently he's started squatting and then lifting his bottom during urination. This doesn't happen every time he urinates. Is it something we should worry about?

Dr. Susan :

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Dr. Susan :

Does Whisper ever seem to be straining to urinate?

Customer:

No obvious sign

Dr. Susan :

Good. Does he seem to groom his hind end excessively?

Customer:

He doesn't focus in it more than anywhere else

Dr. Susan :

OK good.

Dr. Susan :

At this point I would not consider his actions suspicious for a urinary tract problem.

Dr. Susan :

What about his mobility in general? Is he able to jump and run around as usual?

Customer:

Very much so

Dr. Susan :

Excellent!

Dr. Susan :

In that case, I would simply continue to monitor him. At his next annual exam, I would opt for the senior screening lab work - a comprehensive test checking blood and urine.

Dr. Susan :

This can help us to rule out any underlying issues. I do not think this indicates a need for a vet visit now though.

Customer:

That's great . Thank you

Dr. Susan :

You're welcome! Please let me know if you have further questions.

Customer:

That's everything. Thank you

Dr. Susan :

Ok, have a great night and happy holidays!

Customer:

Thank yo . You too
