Our 17yr old male neutered cat has arthritis and has been on

Resolved Question:

Our 17yr old male neutered cat has arthritis and has been on Metacam now for about 4 weeks. This has made a vast improvement, but my question is, do we stop this now, cut back, or what do you recommend? He is 3.8kg and gets 3.8ml Metacam/day.
Thank you

Dr. Susan :

Hi, I can help you with your question today.

Dr. Susan :

You are correct to think about changing his medication protocol!

Dr. Susan :

We always want to give the least amount of medication possible to maintain his comfort level.

Dr. Susan :

Metacam in cats always makes me a little nervous about renal function as well.

Dr. Susan :

I would like to see Stripes on a joint supplement like Cosequin, which can be mixed with his food once daily.

Dr. Susan :

It comes in capsules which you break open over his food.

Dr. Susan :

Another option would be injections of Adequan.

Dr. Susan :

I would like to start by reducing his medication to every other day dosing.

Dr. Susan :

I would wait about 1-2 weeks before determining if he is still doing well.

Dr. Susan :

If so, I would try to go down to every third day on the Metacam.

Dr. Susan :

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Dr. Susan :

I am happy to continue until I provide the service that you seek.
