Last year my cat had severe gastro-inflammatory disease,

Customer Question

Hi, last year my cat had severe gastro-inflammatory disease, anaemia then pneumonia & seemingly cured. However, just lately she has started being sick again - we don't know how often as she goes out a lot. Once she brought up bright red blood. At the vets she has had 2 steroid jabs. Theres a strong possibility she has ingested a toxic substance through eating grass, toxins from plants which have been sprayed with weed killer & she goes into neighbours rubbish bags.
She seems in good spirits generally though.
I would appreciate your point of view, thanks, Debbie

Aloha! You're speaking with Dr. Michael Salkin
I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. I believe you're asking why Sindy is vomiting and at least once exhibiting hematemesis - blood in the vomitus which is a symptom which should prompt immediate attention from her vet.
Yes, the ingestion of an anticoagulant rodenticide or of a rodent poisoned by that kind of rodenticide can cause such bleeding and vomiting. A hematocrit (red blood cell count) should be performed to see if Sindy has become anemic due to the uncontrolled bleeding seen with such a poisoning. If so, vitamin K is the antidote and should be administered for many weeks.
Her symptoms aren't pathognomonic (specifically indicative), however, of poisoning. In fact, there are too many possible etiologies of vomiting to list in this venue. In light of that fact, I'll perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests initially and if nothing untoward is found, proceed to ultrasound my patient's abdomen. I'm particularly interested in seeing if inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or an infiltrative malignancy such as lymphoma or mastocytosis is present upon ultrasound imaging.
I regret that I can't be more specific for you from here. I, too, would need to thoroughly investigate Sindy as outlined above. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
