printer - hp deskjet 2542 won't print. The handbook is not

printer - hp deskjet 2542 won't print. The handbook is not very customerfriendly

May I know the operating system you are using? Is it Windows 7?
Customer:

windows 2010 I think

Shefin :

Do you get any error while trying to print?

Customer:

After I send a Word page to print, the paper is then sent - but with no letter printed!

Shefin :
Remove all the ink cartridges from the machine.
Customer:

Done

Shefin :
Then clean the contacts on the cartridges as well as inside the machine itself. Inside means the printhead where the cartrdige seats.
Customer:

what next?

I apologize for the delay in my response.

Shefin :
Do this with a small amount of warm water on a cotton swab until no ink comes off on the swab.
Shefin :
If any of the other cartridges are low, empty, leaking or bulging replace them.
Customer:

Do you mean the small Metal type printheads

Shefin :

Yes. Do not try to remove the printheads. Just clean it.

Customer:

done - will I put them back and try again

Shefin :

Let it dry.

Shefin :
Then turn off the machine and unplug it for 5 minutes.

Insert the cartridges and try printing anything.

Customer:

just done that - but still nothing

Shefin :

Please wait a minute.

Are you sure that you have enough ink on the cartrdiges?

Customer:

should do, however how do I find out . Also all the printer info tells me is that there are several "in the queue" to print now.

Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP printer, and then click the icon for your HP printer (). The printer software opens.
Shefin :

You can also open the HP printer software from your computer desktop. Double-click the icon for your HP printer

Are you able to open that?

that's great - have been able to delete the queue

Click the Estimated Ink Levels icon. The HP Toolbox opens.

Customer:

done and its telling me that the computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device?

Okay.

We will try reinstalling the driver.

Have you checked the ink level?

Shefin :

Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. The Estimated Ink Levels window opens.

Customer:

it did but didn't give any info other when it said unable to establish....etc.!

Are you able to copy like Xerox without using the computer?

Customer:

Just tried to photocopy, it starts,but then the printer the icon no8 is flashing (which according to the handbook is that either low on ink or ink cartridge problem and no9 flashing - "control panel display -

Were you able to check the ink level?

May I know the light that blinking?

No info given as I mentioned above . Just wonder if I should leave it and visit a local printing shop nearby me?

Tell me the number of the light.

Shefin :

Just let me know the light. If the issue is with ink, we can resolve the issue by replacing it.

the blinking lights were 5 and 6

The issue is not with the cartrdiges.

Shefin :

The cartridge access door is open, or there is a carriage jam.

Shefin :

Might be a carriage jam

Only the cartrdige lights and no attention light. RIght?

Light number 4 is not blinking. Right?

Shefin :

Make sure that it is blinking and not ON.

Are you sure that the lights are blinking and not ON?

If it is blinking, the issues with defective cartrdiges.

If it is on, the ink is low.

Shefin :

So, I would suggest you try replacing the cartrdiges, before doing anything else.
