I was printing a number of pages and the printer just stopped with three red lights fashing at top where there is a big red cross and bottom where ther is black and colour buttons

What is the make and model of the printer please?

Also, that sounds like a paper jam.

Okay, so if you were printing alot of pages, and if you dont REMOVE them from the OUTPUT tray frequetly after they are done printing.......they will cause the paper coming out to JAM.

So, you might have a jam INSIDE the printer.....in which case you have to open the bottom of the printer to clear the jam.
