can I connect both a dmp-bd83eb-k (player) and a dmr-bd170eb (recorder) to my tx-40c300b (tv) and what cabling would be best?

Yes you can and you use HDMI cables. So one HDMI connection to the player and to one of the inputs on the TV and the second one (the recorder) the the second HDMI input on the TV.
