My LG 2.5" external hard drive HXD2 will not open on my laptop as there is a power surge on the port. It will ntfunction when attached to a 2.0 high speed hub either - any suggestions please?
Optional Information: Make: LG Model: HXD2 Already Tried: Rebooting the computer and plugging in the HDD before the computer boots up - this works occassionally. Was thinking about trying FAT32 formay utility as described in the manual but don't really understand this.
Hello There Sir or Madam! My name is XXXXX XXXXX X'll be helping you today. Can I ask a few questions to get more information from you? What operating system are you running? XP, MAC os, etc..When you plug the External HDD into your laptop, are you getting an error message about a power surge? Thanks!
Operating system is Windows XP
Yes I am getting error message about power surge and sometimes that the hardware is not recognised
Hello again,I was reading some on this issue, and I should have thought to ask before - How many USB devices are plugged into your computer when plugging in the external drive? It could be that you have too many devices connected at once and there is not enough power available to power the external HDD. What is the make and model number of computer that you have? There may be driver updates for the USB cards installed in your computer which may fix the problem. Also, make sure windows is fully updated. I have seen this power surge problem happen a lot with Windows Service Pack 2, but it seems to been largely solved with Service Pack 3 and later.Microsoft UpdateThanks!
Did you get my reply?
I am already using service pack 3 - no newer updates available
I only plug the HDD into the laptop because of this problem - the printer will not work alongside it
The computer is a rather old Compaq, but this happens intermittently on any computer I use it on.

Hello,It looks like this could be caused be a few different issues: 1) Defective USB ports (unlikely since you have said that you have similar issues on other computers)2) Bad USB cable3) The external drive itself is defective4) Out of date drivers for the usb cards5) Underpowered power supply.I would recommend trying the following to help narrow down the issue:Experiment with only the external drive (as well as keyboard and mouse) plugged into the computer to measure the success rate of being able to access the drive. When you start to plug other devices in, such as printers, etc, and the success rate is hit or miss, the power supply might not be able to supply enough power to all the devices asking for it.Visit Compaq's website to download and install the updated USB drivers for your computer. If you give me the model number of your compaq, I can help you find the drivers needed. If you are able to replace the USB cable, I would try that as well, as a faulty wire could be culprit. If after all of these steps are tried, and the problem still arises, your external drive may have just gone bad, and you may want to pull all the data off and place it on a new device.Let me know how I can help further!
