Sounds like the hard drive may be failing which is why the recovery manager isn't working.
You're going to need a hard drive diagnostics program to see if the drive is bad. On a different computer download the Ultimate Boot CD from http://lug.mtu.edu/ubcd/ubcd511.iso
you will need to burn it to CD using a program like imgburn, which you can download from here: http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-11673524.html
If the hard drive is bad, you will need to replace it and you will need to get the recovery discs for the laptop because any replacement drive will be blank.
