My PC has stopped retaining any changes made after a bootup.

My PC has stopped retaining any changes made after a bootup. ie any positional change of desktop icons go back after bootup ie preferences in my Opera Browser are deleted after bootup also when selecting a file for download I get an additional download of an unknown and usually weird file. Please do the following
Click Start, type in CMD and wait for Command Prompt to appear in the list
Right click it and select Run As Administrator
A black window opens
type in
chkdsk /f
press enter. It will complain volume is in use and if to run on restart. Say YES
Restart the computer. When windows has loaded, make a change, restart the computer and tell me if it is still not retaining these changes please

ok, do this George
Click Start, type in SYSTEM RESTORE press enter
Follow the steps to perform a system restore choosing a date when you did not have the problem.
When it completes, check if you still have the problem and please let me know.

The restore could only go back 2 days and the result was as follws

Restore did not complete successfully and files & settings were not changed.

The writer experienced a non transcient eror

ok George,
The hard disk has a very serious issue.
The data on it is corrupted, we try to repair but it will not allow.
We are going to have to reinstall windows. We need to do this soon, as the computer is going to stop working very soon.

it was built by a company that is no longer in business :-(

The C: disk is a 500Gb hybrid

ok, actually it is illegal to have it without the disk...
But regardless. Do this
Turn off computer
Turn iot on and start pressing F8 until a menu appears
Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt
when you can type, type in
sfc /scannow
press enter and when it has finished
chkdsk /f
press enter
Say YES, restart the computer and see if it retains changes please
