Hi, I want to configure a VPN connection for my HOme. My

Customer Question

Hi,

I want to configure a VPN connection for my HOme.

My current setup is I have a SKY router with 1 Static IP and then a VPN Firewall router with a LAN IP assigned by the SKY router DHCP. I have setup port forwarding on my SKy router to the VPN firewall so that i can connect to it from outside i.e. INternet.

I am able to connect to my VPN from the internet but can't access any of devices connected to my Home LAN. All my home devices are connected to my VPN so that I can access from outside i.e. INternet.

Please help confgure my VPN and router so that its acessible from outside.

Thank you for using JustAnswer.com my name is Josh and I am going to assist you today.

When you attempt to test the VPN connection are you using your home internet connection or are you testing the VPN using a different internet connection?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I am using a different Internet connection.

Go onto one of your computers that is in the local network (and will remain in the network) and open a command prompt window.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

Type in:

ipconfig

Then press enter

Note the IPv4 Address that is listed.

Then using another computer connect to another internet connection and then connect to the VPN. Once connected open a command prompt window and check the IPv4 address that is set to the external computer.

Then let me know what the two IP addresses are.
Expert:  Joshua C. replied 3 years ago.
One quick note, the computer connected to the VPN will have two IPv4 addresses let me know both of them (including the one from the local computer)

Hi,

IP Address for the one in local area network.

Ok so your local IP range is:

172.16.64.X

And the local computer you checked is:

172.16.64.4

If the VPN is setup correctly when you connect you should get a 172.16.64.X IP address (because you will be connected virtually to the local network).
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi,

It should be the case but it is not as of now.Give me a min. and i will reconnect my VPN and see.

Give me 2 mins.

Expert:  Joshua C. replied 3 years ago.
When you do connect to the VPN and get the IP address in the command prompt try:

ping 172.16.64.1

and then also try

ping 172.16.64.4

It looks like you are connected to a different router than your other devices. You are being handed a different IP range.

You need to check the two routers and see which one is handing out 10.10.10.X IP ranges and also check which one is handing out 172.16.64.x addresses.

The reason your VPN computer can't connect to the other computers is because it is in a completely different IP network range.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi,

Can you tell how do i do that ?? i can send you the screenshot if you want to, of the pages of the VPN???

I will review the SR101 and the VPN-FVS318-v3 to see what settings need to be set.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi,

Just to give you a brief that My Sky router has got a Public IP = 176.248.96.76 and LAN IP = 172.16.64.1.

I created a port forwarding rule on SKY router to forward VPN request to the Netgear VPN LAN IP. Netgear Lan IP = 172.16.64.8 and a WAN IP assigned by SKY router which is = 172.16.64.3 (WAN IP of the VPN).
