Customer Question

My Acer T180 PC is stuck on the opening Acer screen and will not boot into Windows 7 whatever I do (Del, F12, F8, you name it, nothing works). I recently upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit. What can I do now?

Hi my name is Jeremy, I would like to assist you with your question. I am an expert here on JustAnswer.com in the computer field.

How are you doing today?

Do you mind testing something for me?

First make sure there are no CD's Memory cards, or bootable USB devices connected such as external hard drives, or flash drives. If you do not have these attached lets move on:

Unplug the Power Cord.

Remove the side panel of the Desktop

Locate and remove the CMOS battery.

Leave the CMOS battery removed for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes reattach the battery then turn it back on.

If that does not do the trick try disconnecting the sata cord going to the hard drive. This will test if the hard drive

The sata cord looks like the above picture, just disconnect it from the hard drive. If it says No bootable device and passes the Acer screen the hard drive is your culprit.

If you run into any issues i'll be here to help you in any way I can

OK Jeremy. Sorry about the interval. Well, that's the CMOS battery disconnected and the sata chord both respectively disconnected and the system tested. Result: no change! It is still stuck on the Acer screen when I switch on.

Expert:  Jeremy replied 3 years ago.
Robin, did you make sure no SD, CD, or USB devices were connected? Also when you removed the CMOS battery was the power cord disconnected? Thank you so much for testing the first steps :)
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes, all these conditions were satisfied.

Expert:  Jeremy replied 3 years ago.
Okay, as a test. Can you remove the Power cables from the CD drive, and the Hard Drive at the same time, just to see if we can bypass it?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Right. That's the CD drive and Hard drive power cables (which I presume are the ones with four actual cables - one red, one yellow, and two black - am I right?) detached and the computer switched back on.

Still the Acer screen.

Expert:  Jeremy replied 3 years ago.
Robin do you have any PCI cards? PCI cards look like this:

Can't see anything like that. There's only one large motherboard that matches anything like it.

Expert:  Jeremy replied 3 years ago.
Besides the CMOS bring the issue There are only two other possible reasons for this.

1) A bad stick of ram, we can easily test this

The ram looks like the above picture. You want to unplug the power. Remove one stick (it has two notches that slide in opposite direction to remove)

Try to turn it on with one stick. If it still freezes, unplug the power again, re-insert the stick, remove the other one and try to turn it on.

If it still fails the ONLY other thing it would be is the motherboard itself

The only one I could find was on eBay for £18.74 at

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acer-Aspire-E380-T180-Motherboard-MCP61S-EM61SM-/150798666716?pt=Motherboards&hash=item231c4d0bdc

If it turns out to be the motherboard itself. Installation is super easy and i'll be here to help you in any way I can

Jeremy! Sorry about the long breaks between communications. I will follow your suggestion about exchanging the motherboard (gulp), but I'm afraid there will be yet another long gap before I'm back in touch. Regards. Robin.
