I accepted skype request to instal an upgrade but now I cannot

I accepted skype request to instal an upgrade but now I cannot get back into Skype.
the system asked me to confirm my email address and password but when I tried to do so it went into a loop - literally, the cursor goes round and round.

Have you tried re-installing software?
From your question its understood after software updation you ran into trouble. So i believe Skype re-installation may solve this issue.
