Jamston :

What stage is it at at the moment? Have you recently tried to update and encountered the errors?

Customer:

Ok, if you click the start button is there a little shield icon over the power icon indicating a restart is need to install updates?

Customer:

where do you mean

Jamston :

In this image it is not shown, but the red power button is, you should see the red power buttong with a little yellow shield on it

Customer:

It comes up on check update down load failed

Jamston :

Is that in the windows update window?

Customer:

yes

Jamston :

Ok, if you click the start button then the red power button, it should start to switch off while installing updates, can you try that for me now please?

Customer:

dont know where you find the red power button

Customer:

running check for update again

Jamston :

There is no need to check again. Vista gets stuck quite often at this stage, I deal with this day in day out when reinstalling customers machines

Customer:

Still here

Jamston :

If you look at the link I sent above, the power button is shown just under the word help

Jamston :

click the red power button and let it shut down and install updates

Jamston :

Did you receive my last message? The service appears to be a little intermittent

Customer:

Yes but wont load the sunspot link

Jamston :

Ah right, ok, if you just click start then the red power button, it is red with a circle with a vertical coming out of the top

Jamston :

Let the computer shut down, it may take a while to install the updates

Customer:

It shut down came up with Launch startup repair then after a while restore eventualy it re started .on update it say download failed error

Jamston :

Did it install some updates though while it was shutting down?

Customer:

NO only the one to update

Customer:

it has downloaded updates recently just never this one

Jamston :

Does it say what the update is?

Customer:

Microsoft.net framework 3.5 family update KB959209 x64

Jamston :

and that is the only update offered at present?

Customer:

there are 4 more optional but not attempted to down load. it downloaded an important one this morning

Jamston :

and that important one has installed ok?

Customer:

Yes

Jamston :

Ok, i think it might be best to try and download that update separately and try and run it outside of windows update

Jamston :

I will get you a link

Customer:

How do you do that

Jamston :

That is the update as a standalone package

Customer:

do i need to delelete the failed on first

Jamston :

no, just download from the above microsoft link

Jamston :

and run

Customer:

There are 3 downloads which one

Jamston :

Oh, i only get 1 option on this machine, but it is a different version of windows i am using, what are the options

Customer:

Microsoft suggests

Jamston :

There appears to be some problem with the service

Jamston :

Ah, it may have settled down now

Jamston :

Are you there?

Jamston :

The problem with the last link was that it was for 32bit versions of windows, you need the 64bit version, apologies, it was the wrong link I gave you

Jamston :

There is also a correct order to install all three downloads, as all are rquired

Jamston :

Have you managed to get back to the right download page?

Customer:

yes but it states when trying to install updates it comes up with not for this mc

Customer:

Yes

Jamston :

Oh right, that is definitely the right link for 64bit windows vista, as you previously stated you have a 64bit version of windows

Customer:

Yes 64bit.I have a problem with office 2007 it say it not on mc but the file is there but wont open documents could this affect it?

Jamston :

Ok, lets try something else. We will try and run the microsoft fixit program for windows update, then try to update in the usual way again.
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

Jamston :

follow the link and click the green run now button

Jamston :

The inability to open word dosc may well spring from these windows update issues yes

Customer:

Hi still said after running that problem in installing recent up dates Failed i have re booted

Customer:

sorted few other problems it states

Customer:

not sorted office

Customer:

Still here

Jamston :

hmmm, there are a couple of options, we can either persist with trying to do it the microsoft way or we can try and use a 3rd party updater. It is safe and reliable, I use it all the time, it grabs all the individual downloads from micrsoft and installs them in a different manner.

Jamston :

Which way would you rather try.

Customer:

wats the updater called

Jamston :

WSUS Offline

Customer:

I will leave it for now have to go out

Jamston :

No problem, I will be about later. I can make a guide with pics on how to use WSUS if needed later

Customer:

Hi i am back

Jamston :

Hi messages are being a bit problematic

Jamston :

Are you there?

Customer:

Seems so

Customer:

Yes

Jamston :

Do you want to try updating using WSUS then, or would you rather try the Microsoft route?

Customer:

WSUS ok

Jamston :

ok, can you see this link
http://download.wsusoffline.net/wsusoffline88.zip

Customer:

Yes will do

Jamston :

download wsus and open the zip file, then drag the 'wsusoffline' folder to your desktop.

Customer:

The link will not load not highlighted in blue

Jamston :

try that link

Jamston :

the download link is on the right hand side under the 'most recent version' banner

Jamston :

click the 'version 8.8' link

Customer:

no download button just clicked 8.8 in blue box

Jamston :

there is no explicit download button, the words 'version 8.8' is the download link

Jamston :

it may have just started downloading in the background

Customer:

Done

Customer:

how can i tell

Jamston :

ok, open the .zip file you have just downloaded and drag the 'wsusoffline' folder inside onto your desktop

Jamston :

you may need to navigate to your downloads folder

Customer:

Done

Jamston :

ok, open the wsusoffline folder on your desktop

Customer:

done

Jamston :

there should be quite a few folders in there and two files called 'updategenerator'

Customer:

Yes

Jamston :

run the one that ends in .exe or has a little icon looking like a box and a disc

Customer:

none .exe

Jamston :

try running both, one should ask you how you want to open the file, thats the wrong one, the other one should open the wsus main window

Jamston :

and if you just bear with me a few seconds I will make an image showing you what bits to tick and click

Customer:

done

Jamston :

excellent. What version of Office are you on, so I know what boxes to tick to show you?

Customer:

2007

Jamston :

Thanks

Customer:

ticked windows vista english and office 2007 english

Jamston :

64 bit vista?

Customer:

Yes now

Jamston :

Jamston :

Ok, make sure all the boxes on your version are the same as my version

Jamston :

except in box D, you will need to click the little button with the three dots and decide somewhere for wsus to store the updates

Customer:

Not showing your picture

Jamston :

Have you clicked the full size image link

Customer:

what do i put in target directory

Jamston :

I would make a new folder in the 'wsusoffline' folder on your desktop, name it downloaded updates or something like that

Jamston :

then navigate to that folder after you have pressed the little three dots buttong

Customer:

ok done

Jamston :

You don't need me to do another pic for what you need to tick on the office tab do you? Its just the one box

Jamston :

office 2007 english

Customer:

no done

Jamston :

ok, hit start in the bottom left and it should open a small window with a black backgrouind with white writing

Jamston :

and it will take a while to download all the updates

Customer:

Will leave fro 20 mins to have tea

Jamston :

no problem I will nip to the shop

Jamston :

has it started?

Customer:

Yes

Jamston :

Good good, let me know when its all done

Customer:

Will do

Customer:

its finished asked if want to see the log

Jamston :

Ok, no need to check the logs

Jamston :

Now navigate to the 'downloaded updates' folder we created

Customer:

ok

Jamston :

and run the program called 'UpdateInstaller'

Jamston :

its icon is a little shield

Jamston :

with a tick

Jamston :

You should have the program open with a load of tick boxes in front of you

Customer:

got it what do you want me to do

Jamston :

make sure the following are ticked:

Jamston :

root certificates

Jamston :

c++ runtime libraries

Jamston :

Internet explorer 9/10

Jamston :

DirectX Runtime Libraries

Jamston :

Management Framework 3.0

Jamston :

Office File Converters

Jamston :

Office File Validation

Jamston :

In the control section in the bottom the only thing that should be ticked is 'Verify Installation packages'

Customer:

only management framework 4

Customer:

do you mean ie 9 and 10

Jamston :

Thats fine. Tick it. Oh, sorry I forgot a couple that also need to be ticked in the upper section. Make sure 'Install Net Framework 3.5 sp1' and also 'install net framework 4.x' are ticked

Jamston :

Is there anything listed in when you click the software tab at the top

Customer:

wont let me tick either of those

Jamston :

Ok, we will try to come back to the net framework ones

Customer:

wont let me tick management frame work 4 what about ie which one

Jamston :

Is it giving the option for both ie 9 and 10?

Customer:

yes but it wont let me tick them

Jamston :

ah ok, that means IE is up to date

Jamston :

hit start and let it do its stuff, it will tell you when you need to restart and recall the update program. This means its not finished doing updates but needs a restart to continue and then you will need to open the updateinstaller program again tick what it will let you and hit start again

Jamston :

The restarting in the right place is what windows update seems to make a mess of with Vista

Jamston :

You basically have to keep running the update installer till it says 'no updates available'

Jamston :

Did you get the last few messages?

Jamston :

Sorry, whats your first name?

Customer:

Yes it running sat it will take a while.

Customer:

my name is Alan

Jamston :

No problem Alan, I'll be about for a good while yet.

Customer:

It says end of WSUS Offline uodate

Jamston :

does it say reboot and recall or something along those lines?

Customer:

Yes rebooted and running again

Jamston :

Running the update installer again?

Customer:

Yes you said to run untill no updates available

Jamston :

Thats it, it may take a few more runs yet.

Customer:

say download /image creation copying successful would you like to checkt he log file for possible warnings

Jamston :

ah right, that message is coming from the downloader program. You need to run the 'updateinstaller' in the 'downloaded updates' folder we created

Jamston :

WSUS is two programs, one of them grabs all the update files from the microsft servers, the other installs them

Customer:

OK

Customer:

just the ones ticked

Jamston :

Hopefully some of the ones that were tickable before are not not tickable, meaning they are installed

Jamston :

sorry, 'are now not tickable'

Customer:

ticked about 5

Jamston :

Good good, it won't do any damage installing some of the extra ones and wsus knows not to install stuff you already have or don't need.#

Customer:

paused at listing ids of missing updates (please be patient ) thi swill take a while

Jamston :

shouldnt take too long till you just see loads of text whizzing past

Customer:

update kb2890788 not found

Customer:

any missing update was either black listed or not found

Customer:

end of update

Jamston :

Thats a small security patch for Silverlight, which is like MIcrosfots version of flash, for playing games and watching video. So i wouldnt worry too much about that at this stage

Customer:

what next

Jamston :

Did it not tell you to reboot and recall the update program?

Customer:

no just ending WSUS offline update

Jamston :

Ok, i would reboot to be on the safe side. Then we can try running windows update and see what that thinks.

Customer:

Ok will do

Customer:

tried updating 3 times failed as before the 3.5

Jamston :

Bah, ok, can you go to control panel and then into add/remove programs from there?

Customer:

in to uninstall or change programmes

Jamston :

thats the one, when that opens and populates, have a scroll through and look for anything related to .NET Framework

Customer:

nothing

Jamston :

There should be a tickbox at the top of the window that says something along the lines of show updates or show micrsoft updates, tick that

Customer:

office still the same

Jamston :

any difference in the add/remove programs window with the box ticked?

Customer:

Yes say uninstall an update

Jamston :

is there anything .NET Framework in the list now?

Customer:

7 files going back to feb 2011

Jamston :

Uninstall everything in that list with .net framework in the title

Customer:

It say

Customer:

it says please wait while the current programme is un installed or changed on the first one

Customer:

and all the others

Jamston :

Ah ok, something is trying to install or uninstall

Jamston :

I have had so many similar problems to this with Vista updates, it is always a headache

Jamston :

I would say give it five mins, try uninstalling again, if it still says the current program is being uninstalled etc, the machine will need another restart

Jamston :

then back to control panel and try the uninstall route again once it has restarted

Customer:

Ok

Customer:

i tried to install office over the existing but would not let me.

Customer:

also tried to uninstall mozilla but wont let me do that

Jamston :

Yeah, its because of the botched windows update I think, it should resolve itself after a restart

Customer:

OK

Jamston :

Ah ha, I have found a little clean up tool specifically for net framework updates

Jamston :

we shall try that before trying to uninstall via add/remove programs

Jamston :

You back Alan?

Customer:

No joy still the same let try

Jamston :

Ok, have you tried to do a windows update since you restarted?

Jamston :

because I need you to not try to update after a restart, because the restart starts an update process that doesn't seem to complete and we wont be able to uninstall or install anything while windows is stuck trying to do something with the net framework update.

Jamston :

sorry that should read 'because the restart STOPS an update process'

Customer:

ok sorry computor very slow

Jamston :

No problem. I will be a bout for a little longer tonight, but we can always try again tomorrow, if you would rather.

Customer:

anothe r15 min i am out all day wednesday

Jamston :

Ok, so where are you at now? Restarted and not done a windows update?

Customer:

have just restarted and done nothing else

Jamston :

ok, great.

Jamston :

Download and run this net framework repair tool

Customer:

It Worked

Jamston :

Ok, the repair tool or the win updates?

Customer:

both of them all udates uptodate

Jamston :

excellent, hows office?

Customer:

No but it may now let me reinstall over top will try tomorrow night

Jamston :

ok. lets hope so

Jamston :

I do think it will be related to the windows update issue though

Customer:

would you recomend updating to later operating system

Jamston :

absolutely! Vista is a real pain and windows 7 is a massive massive iimprovement

Jamston :

I personally think windows 7 is the best one they have done for years

Customer:

Thanks for now

Jamston :

No problem, take care
