Jerry Hannell :

hello sir/madam

Jerry Hannell :

I would like to help you, please let me know when you are ready

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Ok I am ready

Jerry Hannell :

hi, are you using the computer in question? so we can go step by step

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

I am using my computer with 2007. I have the document on a memory stick. I have transferred the stick contents back into a file on my computer. Last time we opened the document we were using a computer with 2010

Jerry Hannell :

it seems there is a problem with compatibility,

Jerry Hannell :

can you open the excel file with excel you are having problems with. and SAVE AS in xls extension

Jerry Hannell :

(not xlsx)

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Have done this before and was ok. Ok will try and save as as you suggest

Jerry Hannell :

waiting

Jerry Hannell :

xls is a standard format and you will also be able to open the file in previous versions of excel, even with excel 2000 and 2003

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

I go to the file concerned but cannot find a save as option with right click or toolbar. I am using windows explorer to get to the file. It is a folder within a folder. Would this be the problem

Jerry Hannell :

you need to open the excel file first. when you double click the file, it does not open in excel?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

I have tried to open and the dialogue box opens immediately and I cannot access save as

Jerry Hannell :

are you in excel now?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Yes

Jerry Hannell :

can you press the office button. File Operations Button in Excel 2007

Jerry Hannell :

you should see SAVE AS

Jerry Hannell :

The File Operations Dialogue Box

Jerry Hannell :

do you see "save as" ?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

With exel open I can press office button but the save as option is misted out

Jerry Hannell :

do you have SAVE ?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

no - only new and open and business contact manager are available

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

should I delete the imported files from the computer leaving them just on the memory stick

Jerry Hannell :

we can try it, but first,

Jerry Hannell :

let's try this,

Jerry Hannell :

normally, are you able to SAVE excel files?

Jerry Hannell :

can you open a new (blank) excel document.

Jerry Hannell :

are you able to save it?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Yes. I have another file and I can open this and save and save as is available

Jerry Hannell :

can you go to the excel document you are having problems with. please press CTRL+A

Jerry Hannell :

it will select the document

Jerry Hannell :

and then press CTRL+C

Jerry Hannell :

when done, please let me know

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

done. It has highlighted the whole list of docs

Jerry Hannell :

yes, and then you have copied it to the memory

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

nothing seemed to happen with Control C

Jerry Hannell :

now, can you open a new excel document

Jerry Hannell :

when you are in the new document please let me know

Jerry Hannell :

we will "paste" the document from memory

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

No will not paste. Shall I try again. Control A selected the entire list of files

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Is that right

Jerry Hannell :

in the new document, you need to press CTRL+V

Jerry Hannell :

can you try it

Jerry Hannell :

it will retrieve the copied document from memory and paste it

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Have tried it - the computer just pings

Jerry Hannell :

let's wait

Jerry Hannell :

it will paste it

Jerry Hannell :

can you try again

Jerry Hannell :

you need to press CTRL+A in the excel file you have problems with. and press CTRL+C

Jerry Hannell :

and in new document press CTRL+V

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Ok so I understand exactly what you want me to do. There is a list of docs in the folder, one of which is the file concerned. If I select this and press control A then all of the docs appear highlighted

Jerry Hannell :

let's try this

Jerry Hannell :

can you right click on the file concerned. and select COPY. when done, please let me know

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

done

Jerry Hannell :

now ,right click somewhere in the folder, and select paste

Jerry Hannell :

it will create a copy of it

Jerry Hannell :

it will add -copy text in file name

Jerry Hannell :

do you see it?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

yes we now have a copy

Jerry Hannell :

now can you try to open it in office 2010

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

no because the office 2010 is in a different location

Jerry Hannell :

can you move the file to the other computer that has office 2010

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Unfortunately no.

Jerry Hannell :

what is the problem exactly? are you getting any error messages? if yes, what is the error message?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

It is as follows:

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

Excel cannot open the file Cash Book 2013 - copy.xlsx because the file format or file ext is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file ext matches the format of the file."

Jerry Hannell :

in your other computer that has office 2010

Jerry Hannell :

can you click your start button, and go to SEARCH

Jerry Hannell :

and type this:

Jerry Hannell :

%APPDATA%

Jerry Hannell :

and press enter. it will open a folder. when yoa are in that folder, please let me know

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

As I explained the computer that has office 2010 is in a location 20 mins away. The person is not there (has gone on holiday)

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

I either need to resolve this in 2007 or see if I can get the doc from elsewhere

Jerry Hannell :

ok, can you go to start button on the computer you are using now

Jerry Hannell :

and go to search, and type %appdata% and press enter

Jerry Hannell :

it opened a folder?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

yes done

Jerry Hannell :

are you in the folder now?

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

no it gives you the list of programs you might want

Jerry Hannell :

can you press enter

JACUSTOMER-wbvoj0hq- :

that took me to a folder called Roaming

Jerry Hannell :

(type %appdata% and press enter)

Jerry Hannell :

yes

Jerry Hannell :

Jerry Hannell :
